Find out about the three phases of primary education here.
Early years education provides the building blocks for a child’s success at primary school. Children in our Nursery and Reception classes are offered a wide range of opportunities to help them develop socially, learn new skills, and practise them in a safe, vibrant and happy environment.
Children learn through play, exploration, experimentation and talk. Staff in the Nursery and Reception classes work together closely to plan a broad range of learning opportunities, both indoors and outdoors, throughout the year. Each child is also allocated a key worker who has specific responsibility for monitoring their learning and wellbeing throughout the day.
Key Stage 1 includes Year 1 and Year 2 and builds on the strong foundations developed in the Early Years. Learning is carefully planned to ensure a smooth transition from the Foundation Stage, combining structured lessons with practical, hands-on activities.
Children follow the National Curriculum and are taught core skills in reading, writing, and mathematics through daily lessons. These skills are reinforced across a broad, topic-based curriculum which includes science, history, geography, art, music, physical education and computing.
Learning in Key Stage 1 is engaging and active. Children are encouraged to ask questions, explore ideas and develop independence and confidence as learners. A strong emphasis is placed on social development, cooperation and positive learning behaviours, helping children to grow both academically and personally.
Teachers closely monitor progress and provide support and challenge to ensure every child reaches their full potential.
Key Stage 2 includes Year 3 to Year 6 and builds on the skills and knowledge developed in Key Stage 1. Children are encouraged to become more independent, confident learners who take increasing responsibility for their progress and development.
Children continue to follow the National Curriculum and receive daily lessons in reading, writing and mathematics. These core subjects are supported by a broad and balanced curriculum, including science, history, geography, art, music, physical education, Spanish, computing and personal, social and health education.
Learning in Key Stage 2 promotes critical thinking, problem-solving and collaboration. Children are encouraged to reflect on their learning, understand their strengths and identify areas for improvement. Alongside academic learning, there is a strong focus on developing life skills such as resilience, respect, tolerance and citizenship, preparing children well for the next stage of their education.
Teachers closely track progress and provide appropriate support and challenge to ensure all children are able to achieve their full potential.
