Exploring odd and even numbers using Numicon in Year 1

This week we explored odd and even numbers using Numicon. We first ordered the numbers to 10 to make a numberline. After this we sorted the Numicon into shapes made of pairs and shapes made of one ‘extra’ one which stuck out at the top. We called these odd and even. Next we overlaid the Numicon to see clearly the pairs. Some children said that odd numbers looked like they had one missing but we realised that if we added one, we would get an even number. Finally we sorted the Numicon shapes again and wrote the numerals underneath.
