Understanding ‘addend’ and ‘sum’ in Maths in Year 1

In Maths this week we have been learning how to add two groups together to find the total. We learnt that the number of objects in each group is called an ‘addend’ and that when we combine the addends we are able to find out the ‘sum’. In this picture the children are counting the ducks in each pond and then writing the equation down, using the correct mathematical symbols, to find the correct sum.
