17 May Year 1 at Dalston Curve Garden – Leaf Discovery Session
Year 1 had a wonderful time at Dalston Curve Garden this week, taking part in a hands‑on session all about leaves. The children began with an exciting leaf hunt, exploring the garden to see just how many different types, shapes and textures they could find. They were amazed by the variety of leaves growing all around them.
Using their exploration skills and senses, the children pressed leaves into soft clay to create leaf prints. They looked closely at the veins and patterns each leaf made, noticing the tiny details that make every leaf unique. These clay prints will be painted in our next session, ready to become beautiful pieces of nature‑inspired art.
The children also used leaves for rubbings and colour‑over designs, experimenting with pressure, pattern and texture. This activity supported their fine motor skills and encouraged them to observe carefully as they worked.
Throughout the session, the children collaborated brilliantly in their teams — asking thoughtful questions, sharing discoveries and being mindful of their surroundings in the garden. It was a calm, creative afternoon full of curiosity and connection with nature.
We look forward to continuing our project with Laura and the team as the children build on their learning over the coming weeks.
