01 Apr Year 1’s Class Sharing Assembly: Nobody Owns the Sky
Year 1 treated us to a fantastic assembly this week, where they shared their learning about Brave Bessie Coleman, who in 1921 was the first African American woman to gain a pilot’s licence. Due to segregation and sexism, Bessie was refused entry into American aviation schools, so she learned French and travelled to France to gain her licence, defying those who said she couldn’t fly. Following this she became a very successful stunt pilot. Bessie Coleman refused to perform at segregated events and was passionate about encouraging others to not be held back by racism and sexism.
Year 1 performed brilliantly – well done everyone!
