09 Jul Year 3’s Yinka Shonibare Inspired Batik
Inspired by the work of Yinka Shonibare, and as part of their topic- The Kingdom of Benin – Year 3 began to make their batik fabric designs this week. We began by using a tjanting, which allows for melted wax to be carefully drawn out on to fabric. If the wax is added with no gaps in the lines, any ink added will remain separate from other colours. We had a limited palette of ink colours: red and yellow, and we could make orange, emulating Yinka Shonibare’s piece seen here in this post. We then added the ink to cover the fabric piece, creating bold and vibrant pieces.
