29 Jun Year 5 Maths: Composition of 1000
The children in Miss Mather’s Year 5 maths group have been studying the composition of 1000: how many hundreds it is made from, how many tens, and how many ones. We used Dienes apparatus to help the children see the value of these numbers and how 1000 is composed. We counted in hundreds, bridging through 1000, for example: 1000= ten hundred, 1100= eleven hundred, 1200= twelve hundred. We also counted in tens, bridging 1000, for example: 99 tens = 990, 100 tens = 1000, 101 tens = 1010, 102 tens = 1020. Counting in different (non-standard) ways helps children make connections with numerical patterns and supports them to understand how numbers fit within the number system.
